Description

Jukungan Ki Dukuh Jumpungan” by I Nyoman Suwija beautifully portrays the rich history of the kingdom on Nusa Penida Island. This 130×90 cm oil painting on canvas tells the story of the royal descendants of Ki Dukuh Jumpungan, the king of Nusa Penida. It features two brothers: Rengan, who lived in Bias Muntig Palace, and Ratu Gede Mecaling, who resided in Dalem Peed Palace.

Rengan, depicted with a strong and determined character, is unwilling to let anyone challenge his claim to the throne. The painting illustrates the dramatic tale of Rengan’s attempt to destroy Bali Island. Upon hearing of a powerful knight emerging in Bali, Rengan decided to attack. However, Serikesari Warmadewa, the ruler of Bali, guarded the land from Padang Bai to Padang Galak (East to West).

When Rengan arrived from the south, Serikesari Warmadewa leapt onto the boat (jukungan) carrying Rengan. Instantly, the boat was turned back towards Nusa Penida, crashing into the island and splitting into two pieces. These pieces formed the small islands now known as Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Serikesari Warmadewa then built a watchtower in Sanur, in an area now known as Belahjong, which means “split boat.”

The painting uses a color palette of green, blue, and white to bring this legendary story to life, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Bali and Nusa Penida.
