Likko Wood Carver

Meet Likko, a 48-year-old artist from the beautiful Mas Village in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Likko’s family has been carving wood for generations, and he learned the craft from his father when he was just 7 years old.

A very talented wood carving master from Mass Village, Ubud, Bali that shows his talent and philosophy on each of his piece.

The story of wooden sculpture-making in Mas Village is closely linked to the journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha, who visited the village and planted Tangi trees around Taman Pule Temple. He predicted that the village would thrive through wood products. From there, artists began crafting sacred objects, masks, and statues, which they presented to the Temple and Balinese kings. Over time, this craft became commercialized.

Between 1970 and 1990, Mas Village artisans reached their peak, but with the rise of technology and the impact of Covid-19, what was once thousands of sculptors has now decreased to around 500.

The Inspiring Story of Likko, Master Wood Carver from Bali

Meet I Wayan Suwena aka Likko a 48-year-old artist from the beautiful Mas Village in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia. Likko’s family has been carving wood for generations, and he learned the craft from his father when he was just 7 years old. He fell in love with carving right away and has been doing it for 41 years! Wayan can carve in both traditional Balinese and modern styles, drawing inspiration from Balinese stories and legends.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Wayan was busy showcasing his work at exhibitions in Malaysia and even carved giant liberty wood statue for the embassy building in Jakarta. However, when the pandemic hit, he lost many of his customers and had to find other ways to make money. He now does manual labor and works as a driver to support his family.

Despite these challenges, Wayan is determined to share his love for wood carving with young people. He wants to teach them about this traditional art form and keep it alive for future generations. With every piece he creates, Wayan not only tells a story but also leaves a lasting legacy for others to enjoy.
